The Toyota RAV4 has been a mainstay of American roadways since 1994. Debuting at the very start of the SUV boom, this compact model has undergone many changes while remaining the sporty ride that Toyota always had in mind.
The 2026 Toyota RAV4 kicks off a new generation for this SUV, and there are plenty of changes heading our way. The 2026 model promises to be bolder and better than ever, with a selection of efficient and reliable trims, only hybrid powertrain options, and an array of newly updated features and technology. This version of the RAV4 captures everything we love about this SUV and makes it even better.
While details about the 2026 RAV4 are still coming in, we do have plenty of information to share as we get excited for a new year, a new model, and a new outlook from the Toyota RAV4. Let's take a look at the different trims and features to determine which configuration you'll want to test drive first...
Seven Diverse Trim Levels
For the new model year, the Toyota RAV4 will be introduced in seven different trims, grouped by three different design types. The LE, XLE, and Limited trims are part of the Core design group; the SE, XSE, and brand-new GR Sport trims represent the Sport design group; and lastly, holding its own in the Rugged design group is the Woodland trim.
These group names suggest the personality of the trims within them. The Core design trims offer a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The Rugged design group is engineered for a life beyond the pavement with standard all-wheel drive, all-terrain tires, a taller ground clearance, and roof rails with an activity mount. The Sport design group includes 20-inch wheels and mostly all-wheel-drive trims.
In the May 2025 announcement of the upcoming RAV4, David Christ, group vice president and general manager of the Toyota Division at Toyota Motor North America, stated, "At Toyota, customer choice is paramount. With three distinct styles, two highly efficient electrified powertrains, and available front- or all-wheel drive, the all-new RAV4 offers something for everyone and is ready to take on all of life's adventures."
Boosted By Hybrid Power
The all-new 2026 Toyota RAV4 not only comes in different designs and trims but also in your choice of plug-in hybrid or traditional hybrid powertrain. These hybrid powertrains involve Toyota's fifth-generation hybrid system combined with a 2.5L four-cylinder engine.
The traditional hybrid system has been tweaked, with updates to the power control unit, battery, and transaxle raising power from 219 hp to a net 236 hp. The plug-in hybrid models are powered by Toyota's updated plug-in hybrid system, which combines a high-output charger and a high-capacity battery with Toyota's current hybrid technology. The result is more power and greater range. With a net 320 hp, standard all-wheel drive, and an all-electric driving range of 50 miles, the plug-in hybrid RAV4 models are ready to go places.
While the RAV4 Hybrid's trims had previously been strictly in all-wheel drive, three will be offered with front-wheel drive in 2026—a first in Toyota's hybrid history. Front-wheel-drive hybrid vehicles enjoy a net 226 hp, which is a distinct increase from the 203 hp found in previous front-wheel-drive gas-powered models. With this increase in power, it's no surprise the RAV4 has increased its towing limit. While front-wheel-drive models have a towing capacity of 1,750 lbs, most all-wheel-drive models are capable of pulling loads up to 3,500 lbs.
It's important to note that not all trims are offered in all formats. The Core design group is strictly powered by the traditional hybrid powertrain. Of these, the LE and XLE trims can be selected with front-wheel drive. The Sport design group is more varied. The SE trim is offered with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive for the traditional hybrid powertrain, but it is strictly in all-wheel drive if you get the plug-in hybrid powertrain.
The XSE can be selected with either powertrain, but it can only have all-wheel drive. The all-new GR Sport trim is also limited to the plug-in hybrid and all-wheel drive configuration. Lastly, for the Rugged design group, the Woodland trim strictly comes with the all-wheel drivetrain, but it can be had with either the traditional hybrid or plug-in hybrid powertrain.
New Generation, New Accessories
The earliest versions of the RAV4 featured an audio system with a snap-off faceplate designed to deter theft. Oh, how the times have changed! The 2026 RAV4 is outfitted with a 10.5-inch or 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen, depending on which trim and options you select. The standard audio system has six speakers, though Toyota has noted that a nine-speaker JBL Premium Audio system will be offered on some trims.
The 2026 RAV4 will debut some of the latest technology available, including Arene, the software development platform from Woven by Toyota. This platform will allow for greater opportunities for safety, security, and connectivity enhancements and updates moving forward, starting with the Toyota Safety Sense suite, which will also be updated for the 2026 RAV4. Arene is also the key component of the updated Toyota Audio Multimedia system, which includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as Bluetooth for two phones simultaneously.
Though we're awaiting additional details regarding the upcoming 2026 RAV4, it stands to reason that the cabin will receive additional upgrades. Building off the current spacious and comfortable seating, upper trims add heated and ventilated seating, along with SofTex upholstery, a moonroof, and panoramic glass roof options. It's easy to believe Toyota has planned a few additions to this space while preserving the relaxing passenger space that has earned this SUV praise over the years.
Reimagined Design Elements
Given the updates to the lineup, 2026 is destined to be a memorable year for RAV4 drivers. Of particular note is the addition of the RAV4's first-ever GR Sport trim. Longtime Toyota drivers will know that the GR designation refers to vehicles engineered with the team at Toyota GAZOO Racing. Their influence can be found in the sport-tuned GR suspension and handling manners, a more rigid body, and summer tires over 20-inch wheels. The exterior reflects the GR Sport's aggressive nature, with an exclusive grille and front and rear wing spoilers.
The Woodland trim is not a new addition to the RAV4 lineup, but it has transitioned from a mere special edition to its new role as the flagship Rugged design group trim. To give the Woodland trim its own distinct look, Toyota raised the front end and incorporated Rigid Industries LED lighting in the split grille. Inside, drivers will find Woodland-specific patterned perforated surfaces accented with red-orange color splashes. Woodland trims will also include all-weather floor and cargo mats.
Get Ready for the All-New RAV4
It's not often that auto manufacturers make so many significant changes, even when releasing a new generation. However, Toyota demonstrates that it can be done, adding just the right touches to make one of the world's most beloved compact SUVs even more relevant to today's drivers' needs. From a new trim lineup to new hybrid powertrains to features never before seen on a RAV4, the time has come for us to look at one of America's favorite SUVs with new eyes—the eyes of a new generation.
