For some drivers, the idea of stepping up to a three-row SUV may be a little intimidating. After all, carrying that many passengers is a big responsibility. Thankfully, the 2026 Toyota Grand Highlander is here to win over even the most hesitant drivers with its blend of practicality, spaciousness, and overall comfort.

Carpooling, taking long road trips, or filling your three-row SUV to the brim with your hobby gear, adventure equipment, or all of the odds and ends that make your life run smoothly can seem stressful at first, but with its smooth driving manners and meticulously considered interior, you might find that the Grand Highlander is just right for all of your driving needs.

Take a look at some of the best things the 2026 Grand Highlander has to offer drivers who need more space and fewer complications.

Owners Love Practicality

In the past, big SUVs got a bad rap for consuming far more fuel than the average vehicle. And while it's true that larger vehicles need more fuel to propel them, technology has advanced greatly when it comes to power and performance in three-row SUVs.

For the 2026 model year, the Toyota Grand Highlander is offered with a traditional gas-powered engine, an efficient hybrid powertrain, and an exceptionally capable Hybrid MAX option. These three options provide something for a wide range of drivers, whether you are looking for something simple, efficient, or powerful.

The gas-only models are offered in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. All are powered by a 2.4L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes an exceptional 265 horsepower. Fuel consumption depends on the trim and drivetrain selected, but you'll find an EPA-estimated fuel economy of up to 24 MPG combined.

Grand Highlander hybrid models are equipped with a 2.5L four-cylinder hybrid that makes 245 horsepower and are also offered with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, similar to the gasoline-powered models. However, you'll definitely notice the difference at the gas station, as the 2026 Grand Highlander hybrid models have an EPA-estimated fuel economy of up to 36 MPG combined.

The Grand Highlander Hybrid MAX models are so named because the 2.4L four-cylinder turbocharged hybrid powertrain within them produces 362 horsepower—that's more than the high-performance Toyota GR Corolla. The Hybrid MAX models also include full-time electronic all-wheel drive. Despite their impressive performance, Hybrid MAX models still offer an EPA-estimated 27 MPG combined, an improvement over the traditional gasoline models.

Passengers Want Space

Toyota touts the 2026 Grand Highlander as a seven- or eight-passenger vehicle, depending on the trim and seating arrangement selected. This is true, but it undersells the size of the seats. With 57.5 inches of shoulder room in the third row, passengers have just a little less space than the folks in the front row, who get 60.2 inches of shoulder room. The third row also reclines, allowing adult passengers riding in the back seat to stretch out and get comfortable.

This also translates to a significant amount of cargo space. With all seats occupied, the 2026 Grand Highlander offers 20.6 cubic feet of room for your gear. Fold the third row, and that grows to 57.9 cubic feet of space. And, with all but the front row stowed, you'll find a total of 97.5 cubic feet of open area for plenty of supplies for your dream getaway.

When it comes to bringing along even more gear, the Grand Highlander is ready to add a trailer to the mix. The gas and Hybrid MAX models can handle loads up to 5,000 pounds, while the 2.5L hybrid engine can tow up to 3,500 pounds. That compares quite favorably to most of the three-row SUVs on the market, allowing you to haul campers, boats, and other moderately-sized loads.

Groups and Families Need Extra Seating

If you're taking passengers nearly everywhere you go, you'll know that the cabin's layout is just as important as the space it offers. Toyota understands this and designed the 2026 Grand Highlander to offer more than just a lot of room.

While some three-row SUVs only account for the number of seatbelts and headrests needed, Toyota considered the actual needs of the passengers in the seats, which is why there are climate vents in all three rows and 13 cup and bottle holders intelligently integrated into the cabin.

Shoppers looking for eight-passenger seating will find it standard on the lower trims and available on the mid-tier trims. Seven-passenger seating is standard on the rest of the lineup, replacing the second-row bench seat with twin captain's chairs.

The base Grand Highlander LE includes fabric upholstery and an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat, which is replaced by SofTex-trimmed heated front seats at the XLE trim level. The higher trims feature leather upholstery, heated and ventilated power-adjustable front seats with memory function, and heated second-row outboard seats. The Hybrid MAX models add sporty Ultrasuede seating to match their athletic performance.

Drivers Crave Comfort

Comfort isn't just about squishy seats and soft-touch materials. The Grand Highlander is designed to make you feel comfortable driving it, with an array of tech and helpful features that don't make being on the road a complete hassle.

All 2026 Grand Highlander models are outfitted with a 12.3-inch touchscreen to operate the Toyota Audio Multimedia system. This includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with SiriusXM radio.

On most trims, your tunes will be played through a strategically placed six-speaker audio system; however, the higher trims include an 11-speaker JBL audio system with a subwoofer and amplifier. This premium setup needs to be experienced to fully appreciate how good it is.

In all but the LE trim, a Qi-compatible wireless smartphone charging pad can help you keep connected during long days on the road.

The Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite of driver-assistance technology is on board as well, with lane-keeping assist, road sign recognition, and forward collision mitigation to provide peace of mind. Some trims offer a Panoramic View Monitor that operates at low speeds or when in reverse, and a 10-inch Head-Up Display rounds out the enhanced features in the Platinum trim.

All 2026 Grand Highlander models are also equipped with a height-adjustable power liftgate with added jam protection that detects fingers or other important objects that might get pinched when the liftgate is shut. On the upper trims, this also includes foot activation, meaning you can open and close the liftgate just by moving your foot past a sensor.

If sunny days are really your vibe, you'll find a power-sliding panoramic roof is available on many trims.

Now Is a Great Time to Try Out the 2026 Toyota Grand Highlander

With three different powertrain options, several different trims, and a choice between front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, you'll be able to configure your ideal Grand Highlander in no time.
